Just over a year after their debut, the Berlin quartet is releasing their second album. The change in personnel on drums—where ELDER frontman Nick DiSalvo has handed over the sticks and plays on only one song on the album—is not audible in terms of quality. A joy for playing, technical skill, but above all sophisticated arrangements and the typical vintage sound characterize “Onyx,” which has never lost the necessary genre patina. A cohesive and stylistically confident album that takes old heroes out of the display case, dusts them off, and respectfully puts them back in the spotlight. Surprising new moments, quieter songs, acoustic guitars, ballads—which, however, remain pleasantly rough around the edges thanks to the raspy vocals.
