Nearly three years have passed since Gavial released their album “VOR” with a new lineup and a band name change. Since then, the band has been active in the Berlin-Dresden-Leipzig area. While most of the songs for “VOR” were already written when bassist Paul joined the band, the focus since then has been on writing songs as a quartet and using the bass more actively in the songwriting process. The results of this intensive creative phase can be heard on their new album.
However, GAVIAL’s story began almost 15 years ago as a project inspired by a Nirvana song and a play on words called “Two Red Boys.” Three albums as TOURETTE BOYS, collaborations, a split EP, and countless gigs and tours followed. But Tourette Boys? It was time for a change. “VOR,” the band’s fourth album, was released in 2023, their first on Exile On Mainstream. And with this step comes a long overdue name change, which the band itself explains with the words:
“Over the past few years, however, we’ve frequently discussed our music, our videos, and our name, and tried to reflect on our decisions during that time. Regarding the band name, we’ve come to the conclusion that it’s no longer appropriate to continue using it. People affected by Tourette syndrome deserve respect, and we believe this band name demonstrates a lack of that. We would like to apologize for that. Therefore, we will no longer be making music under the name “Tourette Boys.” Instead, we will continue our musical journey as ‘Gavial.’”
